Tiki culture began in the 1930s. The first Tiki restaurants were Don the Beachcomber (in Hollywood) and Trader Vic's (in Oakland). These establishments were based on a Polynesian theme with rattan furnishing, exotic drinks, and flower leis.

As a whole, tiki culture was in its heyday in the postwar period. Those returning from the Pacific front brought tales and souvenirs to fuel the country's thirst for the warm climates and the exotic.
